United Nations Removes Penalties on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit
The UN Security Council gave the green light to a US resolution ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his presidential meeting the following week.
He was appointed interim leader following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that drove out the former president in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of domestic strife.
America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" following Assad's ouster.
Previously, he faced global penalties as the leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to al-Qaeda. America delisted the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations during July.
More Penalties Removed
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.
The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and allied countries for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday comes after US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" working toward stability to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through the region.
After that meeting, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country until he severed ties in 2016.
Previous US Visit
This week's diplomatic engagement will not be Sharaa's first trip to the United States this year. In September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to present to the UN General Assembly in New York for nearly six decades.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status within the global community" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
