Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to the Thunder back in 2019.

The Thunder's star player scored the winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP scored 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, securing the champions a winning beginning.

The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.

But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside the game's hero.

"Determination and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their showing. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, misses, fortune or bad luck. We did enough defensive work to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."

Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.

The Thunder beat the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their first title since the franchise moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.

The Pacers will have the chance to secure some early revenge on Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Rockets are back on court on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from the Slovenian star was not enough to stop his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.

Miami's star picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 points for the road team.

Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
