Taliban Authorities and Pakistani Forces Report Multiple Deaths in Recent Cross-Border Fighting

Frontier Conflict Intensify
Islamabad Armed Forces and Afghan Government Accuse One Another of Initiating Attacks in the Afghan Frontier Region of Spin Boldak

Fresh fighting erupted along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border early on Wednesday morning, with both parties blaming the opposing side of initiating lethal confrontations.

The Pakistani armed forces stated that its forces had killed "15-20 Taliban fighters" and injured many in the Spin Boldak district frontier area.

A Taliban government representative said that twelve non-combatants had been killed and over a hundred wounded by artillery from Pakistan. He added that numerous Pakistani soldiers had been killed. Not one of the alleged deaths could be verified by third parties.

Hostilities between the neighbors has flared since blasts rocked Afghanistan last week, which the Afghan capital attributed on Islamabad. The Taliban reject claims that it is sheltering militants targeting Pakistan.

Online Platforms and Armed Engagements

The two sides are not only battling for the advantage on the frontier, but also on digital platforms, trying to convince the public that their faction is inflicting greater losses.

The most recent clashes come after intense border hostilities over the past few days, when the Afghan forces claimed to have eliminated 58 members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan said it killed two hundred "militants and affiliated terrorists". The claimed casualty figures announced by each side could not be confirmed by external sources.

Several days of fragile peace that had lasted since the weekend were broken on Wednesday.

On-the-Ground Reports and Consequences

Footage purportedly of the conflict and its aftermath have been circulated on the internet and on social channels, including footage claiming to be of those killed and blurry shots from low-light cameras claiming to be of check posts demolished. These recordings have not been verified.

A informant in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan reported that fighting erupted at around 04:00 local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday). Another local in the district, who lives about one kilometre away from the frontier post, said that "very heavy clashes continued for almost five hours".

"I see unmanned aircraft and fighter planes soaring over us, a number of our relatives are injured," they said.

A medical professional in one of the medical facilities in Spin Boldak reported that he counted "seven bodies and thirty-six wounded transported to the medical center", including men, females and children.

The situation were "tense" and more casualties were being transferred to hospital, he said.

Evacuations and International Reactions

A local authority figure in Spin Boldak stated that "numerous of families have been displaced since last night due to the heavy clashes". He said they were on "high alert" after a few Taliban posts were targeted by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the remains of two Pakistani military members.

In a separate overnight engagement on the western border, the Pakistani military said that twenty-five to thirty militant and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "suspected" to have been killed.

The hostilities have led to appeals for de-escalation from other countries including Beijing and Russia, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could intervene to broker peace.

On that day, Richard Bennett, United Nations representative on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by accounts of non-combatant deaths and evacuations because of the clashes.

"I call on all parties to practice the utmost caution, safeguard civilians, and abide by international law," he wrote.

Historical Tensions

Pakistan has for years alleged the Afghan Taliban of permitting the Pakistan Taliban to operate from their land and battle against the Pakistani administration in an attempt to enforce a strict Islamic-led system of governance.

The Taliban leadership has always denied these allegations.
