Djokovic Delivers Caution to Jannik Sinner: Doping Ban Will Follow Him Like a "Shadow"

Novak Djokovic has cautioned Jannik Sinner that his three-month doping suspension will persist over his career like a "cloud" – while also questioning the scheduling of the sanction last year.

Details of the Suspension

The Italian player served a three-month prohibition in February 2025 after the global anti-doping body accepted his explanation that a banned anabolic steroid, the steroid clostebol, had been ingested unintentionally.

"That cloud will follow him just as the cloud of Covid will follow me, for the rest of his, or my career," the champion remarked in an interview on Piers Morgan: Uncensored.

"It is a situation where, it was so major, and after such events, over time it will fade, but I believe it won't fully vanish. There's always going to be a certain group of people that will continually reference the incident."

The Champion's Viewpoint

Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "didn't do it on purpose", but he then scrutinized how the Italian managed to serve his time without missing a grand slam.

"There is the lack of transparency, the inconsistency, the convenient timing of the suspension coming between the slams, so he doesn't miss out the others – it simply appeared highly unusual," Djokovic added.

Wider Player Reactions

"I really don't like how the situation was managed and you could hear numerous fellow athletes, both male and female, who had comparable circumstances coming out in the media and asserting it represented favorable handling."
