Called “a US disaster,” legal authorities detailed a chilling account of the alleged killing of rightwing activist Charlie Kirk.
A Planned Assault
Per prosecutors, Tyler Robinson had become consumed by hatred for Kirk and his political views. Officials claim Robinson premeditated the attack in just over a week after discovering Kirk would be appearing at Utah Valley University.
Text Messages Expose Admission
Prosecutors claim Robinson sent his housemate messages confessing to the crime. In a particular exchange, Robinson reportedly stated, “I seized the chance to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
“Delete this exchange,” the suspect reportedly wrote in one communication.
Firearm Details
Authorities say a bolt-action rifle belonging to Robinson’s grandfather was used in the killing. The gun was later discovered in a nearby area wrapped in a towel.
Three unspent rounds were recovered with the rifle, every one marked with inflammatory phrases.
Ideological Motives
Based on accounts from Robinson’s mother, the suspect had recently become more political and begun tilting toward progressive views, supporting LGBTQ+ rights.
The accused had also started seeing his housemate, a man who was undergoing a gender transition, which allegedly led to tension within his household.
Arrest and Charges
The suspect was taken into custody on September 12 and charged with aggravated murder. Prosecutors announced they will seek the capital punishment.
Law enforcement indicate Robinson’s own parent identified him from news images of the shooter and contacted investigators.
Court Proceedings
The suspect made an first hearing on Tuesday, with a waiver hearing set for September 29.
The state emphasized that the information shared are merely accusations at this stage and acknowledged the pain of Kirk’s family.
“Like all murders, the senseless taking of Charlie Kirk’s life has shattered the lives of those he cherished,” said the prosecutor.
